Not been to a meeting before? Consider this...

In the minutes before a typical meeting begins, as we are setting up tables with books, handouts and tissues, we never know who will walk through the door. That's the hardest part, that first step of coming to a support meeting for GLBT people. That, and coming to admit you're one of them or your family member is.

Most folks who come to our meetings find a room full of kindness, understanding, hugs and love.  To their surprise, they find out that everyone in the room has been where they are now, struggling with their feelings. As we sit in a circle, each of us tells a little bit about why we are here. We take as much time as needed to talk and mostly listen to what our guests need to say and help with their fears and lack of understanding.

We have a library of information; any of our books may be checked out and returned at a later date.

Throughout the year, we may have programs about gay-related issues and current events (including "Out in the Workplace" at the Concord chapter). Past meetings have covered issues such as scouting and gays, religion, straight spouses, and understanding transgender. Youth speakers from our local schools have told us their stories and reminded us there is still more work to be done in education and understanding of diversity in our local schools. Also our guest speakers have been from other gay support groups helping in our networking efforts.

If you're looking for a starting place to deal with your sexual orientation or a family member or friend who is gay, please attend one of our meetings. You will be pleasantly surprised that the hardest thing is walking in the door. After that, your heart will open to the love and kindness you will find in our PFLAG family.
